The horse industry has been plagued by hereditary diseases for many years. In an effort to help educate owners, I have attached a link to a very informative site about some of these diseases, and also a link to the University of California - Davis site so members know how to test their pony for these diseases.
Lastly, I found this report from AQHA that sheds more light on the subject.
